How to Be Filled with the Spirit: Reflecting on Ephesians 5:18-20
Scripture Passage: Ephesians 5:18-20 (NIV)
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Introduction
In the book of Ephesians, the apostle Paul encourages believers to live a life filled with the Spirit. It is required of every child of god to be filled with the Spirit of God for without the Spirit of God, we can’t accomplish much for Jesus. The concept is an ongoing process in a believer’s journey. By reflecting on Ephesians 5:18-20, we can gain insights into how we can be continually filled with the Spirit and experience the abundant life God intends for us
The first three major steps to be filled with the Holy Spirit are:
1. Conviction and Repentance: Recognize your sinfulness and repent, turning away from sin and towards God (Acts 2:38).
2. Faith and Salvation: Put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, receiving salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).
3. Desire and Ask: You must have a desire for it
Other Things Are;
1. Avoiding Excesses and Seeking God’s Presence
Paul starts by emphasizing the importance of avoiding excesses that can lead to destructive behaviour. Just as drinking wine can lead to evil, indulging in worldly desires can hinder our ability to be filled with the Spirit. Instead, we are called to seek God’s presence and allow His Spirit to fill us. By consciously setting aside worldly distractions and focusing on our relationship with God, we create space for His Spirit to work in our lives.
2. Speaking Words of Encouragement
Being filled with the Spirit also involves speaking words that uplift and encourage others. Paul suggests that we should engage in conversations that reflect the presence of the Spirit within us. This can be achieved by sharing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. By using our words to inspire and edify, we create an atmosphere where the Spirit can move and touch the lives of those around us.
3. Worshiping with Joyful Hearts
Paul continues by highlighting the importance of worship in being filled with the Spirit. Singing and making music from our hearts to the Lord is a powerful way to express our gratitude and adoration for God. When we engage in heartfelt worship, we open ourselves up to the transformative work of the Spirit. It is through worship that we can experience a deep connection with God and allow His Spirit to fill us with His presence.
4. Cultivating a Lifestyle of Gratitude
The final aspect mentioned by Paul is the practice of gratitude. Being filled with the Spirit involves always giving thanks to God the Father for everything. Gratitude shifts our focus from what is lacking to what we have been blessed with. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and goodness in our lives, fostering an attitude of humility and contentment. When we adopt a lifestyle of gratitude, we position ourselves to receive more of God’s Spirit and experience His abundant blessings.
Conclusion
Being filled with the Spirit is a continuous process that requires intentional choices and actions. By avoiding excesses, seeking God’s presence, speaking words of encouragement, engaging in worship, and cultivating gratitude, we create an environment where the Spirit can work powerfully in our lives. As we reflect on Ephesians 5:18-20, let us embrace these principles and pursue a life filled with the Spirit, enabling us to experience God’s love, joy, peace, and transformation in every aspect of our existence.
